SIXTEEN

ALEX

Ding!

The bell to Reilly’s Pub jangles as I take a step outside. Just as I think we’re ready to finally call it a night, a gift falls right into our hands. Well, more like races by on the street outside the pub.

Everyone but Yamo has been drinking for a while now—she’s been sober for six years but still likes the company. Logan has downed about a pitcher for every pint the rest of us have. I have a strong suspicion he didn’t wait until his recent twenty-first birthday to start imbibing alcohol since his tolerance seems to be the result of more than just his size.

The sudden commotion out front stirs the entire bar. Every last person jostles for a better view out the huge plate windows. Several shove by me on the sidewalk, blocking my view. I move up to the front and gently move some, a little rougher with others who had become emboldened by drink.

I can’t believe my eyes.

It’s the Resistors, heading right down the middle of the street, old-school superhero-style like they aren’t the most wanted people on the globe. Either flying, sliding, gliding along, or leaping from one car roof to another, the entire group of them weaves in and out of traffic as it makes its way toward an unknown target.

Most of the onlookers cheer them on even though they’re outlaws now. I know it’s my job to round them up and toss them in jail, but I have to say I admire their spirit. It brings me back to when I was a kid and had the rare opportunity to watch the Guild zipping through the city on the way to a big showdown with some supervillains.

“What is it?” asks Yamo, who’d just made it outside. As usual, she stayed back to make sure everyone put down enough cash to cover the drinks and a good chunk for Goldie—the bartender she’d been crushing on for about a year.

“Oh, just the Resistors, out there, breaking all kinds of traffic laws as they cruise down the street,” Hank says, obviously not as impressed by the sight as I am. But, impressed or not, I have a job to do—a job I’m starting to question more and more lately.

Let me be clear: I still think doing things right and by the book is, well… right. But all this with Battlegear and Logan? Eaglestar acting like a tyrant? Seems like more of the same to me, like he’s just creating a new Guild, and I’m just not sure.

“Well? I guess that’s our—” I start to say, when I notice that Logan is already stepping onto the pavement.

“Logan! Hold on!” I shout, but it’s too late.

By the time the rest of the group and I move, Logan is already on his way back from trying to chase them down. He’s out of breath.

Whatever extra enhancements “Eric” had helped him out with, speed and endurance aren’t among them.

“We’ll take our vehicles. It’s faster,” I say as I shake my head.
